BookXcess
Brief:
BookXcess was founded to make reading accessible, offering quality books at up to 80% off, turning what was once a luxury into an everyday habit. But in today’s attention economy, affordability is no longer the barrier. Attention is. In Malaysia, teens spend 4–8 hours a day on social media, opening apps multiple times an hour. As short-form, high-stimulation content dominates, long-form reading is declining; replaced by what Gen Z calls “brain rot” – fast, disposable content engineered for instant dopamine. Physical reading has declined by an estimated 25–40%, with 1 in 4 Malaysians no longer reading for leisure. For a brand built on getting people to read, this created a cultural tension. The very audience BookXcess needed to grow with—Gen Z and Gen Alpha—were the ones drifting furthest from books. At a time when stories were being reduced to seconds, reading was no longer competing on price or access, but against the accessibility of doomscrolling.
Solution:
We used brain rot to un-rot brains. The Brain Un-Rot Library retold 100 books as TikTok storytimes. Familiar formats and chaotic retellings hooked audiences. As each story unfolded, text grew longer and backgrounds faded into book pages, turning the content itself into a reading experience designed to encourage sustained attention. Each story revealed its literary source, with discounts driving discovery and purchase. Across stores nationwide, dedicated sections featured the Brain Un-Rot titles. A launch panel featuring a neurologist, lecturer and author brought expert perspectives to this approach to rekindling interest in reading, sparking headlines across the region. In 30 days, views rose 549%, new viewers 345%, and comments and shares 435.2%. Gen Z made up 42% of the audience. High-volume purchases grew 10%, while flagship store sales rose 25%. Featured titles saw sales increases, including 1984 (+63%) and Gone Girl (+33%). We turned scrolling into a new path to reading.
