Brief:
A poetic celebration of Malaysia and its people, the film captures slices of everyday life, weaving together the art, culture, heritage and values that form the fabric of our nation. Narrated through Jangan Kau Kata, a poem by Professor Emeritus Dr. Muhammad Haji Salleh, it invites us to look beyond assumptions and discover the richness of Malaysia through lived experiences, shared histories and human connections. The musical challenge was to create a quiet, understated score with a lyrical undercurrent that gently supports the poetry, allowing the words and imagery to take centre stage.
Solution:
Drawing inspiration from cinematic indie soundtracks, we wanted to create something intimate and understated, steering away from conventional film scoring. Rather than following a traditional emotional arc, the music maintains a gentle, consistent pulse, creating a sense of space, movement and the passage of time. The warm textures of electric guitar and Rhodes form a mellow, contemplative backdrop for the poetry, evoking a sense of quiet curiosity and observation as the many slices of Malaysian life unfold on screen.
