Brief:

Khazanah Nasional Berhad sought to mark the revitalisation of Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad and Seri Negara with a brand film that honours their place in Malaysia’s history while looking towards their future. The challenge was to bring the defining historic moments to life, connecting the buildings’ heritage to the new beginnings they will inspire, through a single cinematic language that could move naturally across time.

Solution:

Director Adriana Tunku and DOP Matthew Chow set out to portray time as one unbroken line: different moments decades apart, connected by place. To achieve this, we used a motion-control robotic arm and programmed it along a single predetermined path. At set points along the path, the shot reveals frames within frames that open onto another moment in time, so the film travels through history without ever breaking movement. The same programmed moves were executed in two very different environments: an under-construction Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, filmed on location with road closures, and Seri Negara, recreated in a studio with purpose-built sets and miniature historical facades. Every pass had to match exactly to seamlessly blend both places. By combining technology with carefully rehearsed movements, live and studio environments and curated moments, we created a single continuous journey across decades and across two buildings, as if they were one place in time.
