Brief:
Merdeka campaigns in Malaysia often default to familiar patriotic imagery and messaging, with promotions dressed in the language of national pride.
IKANO wanted to break away from this formula and create a campaign that felt genuinely Malaysian.
The challenge was to find a cultural truth that Malaysians from all walks of life could instantly recognise, relate to, and see themselves in, turning Merdeka from a generic celebration into a celebration of the people who made it.
Solution:
We drew inspiration from one of Malaysia’s most iconic Merdeka traditions: Merdeka Parade.
But instead of celebrating the polished contingents marching in perfect formation, we celebrated the everyday Malaysians and their relatable quirks.
Kita Kontinjen Malaysia is a playful tribute to the unofficial contingents of everyday Malaysians.
Rooted in relatable shopping mall behaviours, we created everyday contingents from “Kontinjen Laki Tunggu Bini” (men waiting for their partners) to “Kontinjen Taknak Balik Rumah” (kids refusing to go home).
These everyday contingents turned familiar moments into a uniquely Malaysian parade. With this, we celebrated a Malaysia thats less about perfect patriotic formations, and more about shared experiences that bring us together.
