Brief:
Malaysia faces a mounting plastic waste crisis — over 2.5M tonnes yearly, but only 24% recycled. Recycling feels inconvenient and unrewarding, worsened by limited infrastructure and tight urban spaces. ATLAS saw a behavioural truth: Malaysians already use vending machines daily. So instead of changing habits, they reimagined vending itself — if vending can drive consumption, it can inspire recycling. ECOPOD tackled both behaviour and space with a 32 cm ultra-slim AI-powered machine that makes recycling as easy and rewarding as buying a drink. By turning a familiar, gratifying ritual into a daily sustainability act, ECOPOD created a seamless loop of “drop → redeem → reward”, making recycling effortless, visible, and part of everyday life.
Solution:
ATLAS reimagined vending into a continuous loop of recycling, reward, and repurchase. ECOPOD fused design, tech, and behavioural insight into a proudly Malaysian innovation — simple, credible, and rewarding. Recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s thinnest RVM (32 cm), it fits even congested spaces. Users key in their number, drop recyclables, and earn instant credits — no app, no barrier. Endorsed by YB Nik Nazmi, it turned sustainability into a trusted national movement. Deployed in high-traffic areas, ECOPOD made recycling visible and habitual. Within a year: 100 units (PepsiCo & SWCorp), RM 4.07 M earned media, 93% PET target met in two weeks, saving 11,906 kg CO₂ monthly per 100 units.
