With the recent ongoing events in Gaza, director M.Shaffuan wanted to bring more awareness and attention to the ongoing situation. It was then that he decided to make a short film, in collaboration with Denhouse, that expresses the far cry of the peaceful lives we live here in Malaysia '“ compared to those in the Gaza Strip.
The short film follows three individuals in a coffee shop, having a conversation as to what they would do if they were presented with a million ringgit. There, our main character, Fimie, struggles with the idea of life in Malaysia versus the millions of people suffering in the war-torn Gaza Strip.
Solution:
We created a sonic landscape that helped bridge three main pivots of the film; the first, describing a 'normal' and peaceful life in Malaysia, the second, an ominous soundscape, depicting the inner mind of the main character, Fimie as he struggles with accepting the reality of the situation, and third, a solemn ode that conveys a feeling most Malaysians feel about what is going on.
Normalcy can sometimes have an alternate effect, and with the scenes that showed conversation amongst the characters in the film, music was kept to a very minimum, and rather cheerful '“ we wanted to give a sense of fallacy/ parody in the scene that was being shown before the viewer, but in a very subtle and subconscious manner.
The ominous drones crafted gave a glimpse into the mind of the main character, Fimie. We opted to have it ever omnipresent when the main character's face is shown, providing a sense of dread and the unknown.
