Brief:

The film follows three siblings whose children begin to question why their family no longer has a kampung to return to for Raya. Since the passing of their grandparents, the family home and the tradition of balik kampung had slowly been left behind. Determined to give the next generation the same sense of home and belonging they once had, the siblings come together to restore their parents’ house and bring the family back for Raya. The brief was to create a score that could carry the film through memories of the past, the passage of time and ultimately the joy of bringing a family tradition back to life.

Solution:

We created an emotional score inspired by the film’s recurring symbol of the grandfather clock. It serves as a reminder of time passing, memories held within the family home and traditions waiting to be rediscovered. The music develops alongside the siblings as they clean and restore the house, gradually moving from reflection and nostalgia towards warmth and anticipation. As the family finally gathers under the same roof again for Raya, the score grows with them, bringing a sense of life back into a home that had been quiet for years. The music reflects the heart of the story. While time moves forward, the traditions and memories that connect a family can always be brought to life again. Together, the score and folk song take the film from reflection and regret towards warmth, belonging and reconnection.
