Taylors had opened a pitch looking to do a festive Merdeka video surrounding the question "what if 'Boleh' of 'Malaysia Boleh', goes missing?". They wanted to go for something different from the usual festive narrative videos by making a movie trailer instead of a 3-arc narrative complete story. The challenge was (A) how do you create a trailer for a movie that doesnt exist, (B) how do you get the viewer to understand the vague concept of 'Boleh is missing' and (C) how do you direct all of this in a 2 minute video that is concise and emotionally coherent? Many questions to answer in 1 short video
Solution:
We loved the challenge of making a Merdeka/Malaysia Day video that was different.
Story & Characters:
After many rounds of development, we had created a skeleton story of the actual movie and had had to develop the characters so that they wouldn't be too flat or one-note. We realized that it wasn't just about shooting random scenes and pasting it together that makes a good trailer - we had to create a larger story to refer to. By breaking down some of our trailer references we realized that there was a juggling act of emotional dynamics to consider: we had to not only show a good range of emotions in the scenes ie. drama, action, comedy, but also fit it in the trailer in a natural and cohesive way that would make sense to the viewer. This approach carried over to casting as well; instead of treating the talents as generic TVC talents, we had to work with them through table reads (of a trailer no less!) as well as discussing more in-depth about emotions and their character motiva
