Brief:
On the surface, Malaysia has always touted a story of peace. But the past few years saw threats to our unity. With unhappy states pushing for independence and increased racial tension, the very foundation of our country was in turmoil.
Solution:
With all this unrest, PETRONAS wanted to tell a story that ignited our unity and pride. And so from the buried memories of our school days, we unearthed the Rukun Negara – the pledge that every Malaysian has recited for years on end. Its words that carry such weight and meaning especially in today's turbulence was apt, but slowly its meaning and its significance was disappearing. For Merdeka, we told the tale of Cikgu Murni, who rallies an unbothered class of students to truly understand the meaning of the words they recite at every assembly. In her eccentric way and with all her heart, she teaches them to say the Rukun Negara with all their heart. 
We played homage to the olden film making techniques of the PETRONAS ads of yesteryear with static cameras, simple storytelling that focused on emotions. At the end, we dedicated a portion of the film to the Rukun Negara – said in full, out loud, and with heart, accompanied by a single trumpet.
