Brief:

For the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, we created a 3D animated film that introduces Malaysia’s present-day innovations while imagining a future shaped by sustainability, technology, and cultural exchange. The film uses pure visual storytelling to communicate Malaysia’s progress without relying heavily on dialogue or conventional exposition. Through a visually immersive journey, audiences are introduced to ideas of Malaysian innovation, sustainable development, and the country’s vision for the future. A key creative direction was to bridge Japanese anime culture with Malaysia’s sustainability narrative. Inspired by the visual language and sense of wonder associated with Japanese animation, we developed a cinematic 3D world that combines imaginative storytelling with Malaysian identity and contemporary innovation. Rather than simply presenting information, the film aims to make the audience feel and experience the story visually connecting technology, nature, culture, and human imagination into one narrative. The result is a visual representation of Malaysia looking forward: rooted in its identity, inspired by innovation, and connected to a more sustainable future.

Solution:

The Challenge The project presented two key constraints: a tight production timeline and a limited budget, while still requiring a visually ambitious film suitable for an international platform such as Expo 2025 Osaka. The challenge was to maintain a high level of visual quality and storytelling without compromising the scale and ambition of the creative vision. The Solution To overcome these constraints, we developed a hybrid production workflow that combined motion capture, AI-assisted visual development, traditional 3D production, and human-led art direction. Motion capture was integrated into the animation pipeline to efficiently produce much of the character performance and movement, allowing us to achieve complex animation within the limited production schedule. AI was introduced primarily as a visualisation and environment-development tool. It allowed us to rapidly explore and establish background environments and sub-locations that would otherwise require significantly more production time. However, AI was never used to define the overall creative direction. We engaged professional artists to conceptualise the larger visual world, establish the artistic direction, composition, and storytelling language. AI-generated elements were then selectively used as supporting material, with our team refining and matte-painting the sub-locations to integrate them into the final 3D environments. This hybrid approach allowed us to balance creative control, production efficiency, and visual ambition using technology to accelerate the process while keeping human creativity at the centre of the work.
