Brief:
Too often, heritage is preserved by looking backwards.
Beautiful buildings. Stories from another time. Memories left untouched.
But heritage only matters if it continues to mean something.
Through Dana Warisan, Khazanah Nasional Berhad was given an opportunity to do more than restore two of Malaysia’s most significant landmarks — Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad Complex and Seri Negara.
The challenge was to bring their stories back to life. To remind Malaysians why these places mattered, what they witnessed, and why their legacy still belongs to us.
Because restoration is not about returning a place to what it was.
It is about giving what came before us a reason to matter again.
Solution:
To restore our heritage, we first had to see it differently.
That became the thinking behind Melakar Semula — Khazanah Nasional’s commitment through Dana Warisan to give places from our past a future worth remembering.
Rather than tell another story about preserving old buildings, we told one about reimagining what they could become.
Amirah, a young architect entrusted with restoring two national landmarks, became our lens into that idea. As she draws, studies and reimagines what once was, restoration becomes more than conservation. It becomes an act of creation.
Because Khazanah wasn’t simply bringing these buildings back.
It was giving them another life.
Melakar Semula became a reminder that heritage stays alive when we take what we’ve inherited, see it with fresh eyes, and dare to draw what comes next.
Not preserving the past as it was.
But giving it a future.
