Brief:
Malaysian youth snacks constantly but rarely at KFC. They are the most food-curious generation in F&B history, yet they walk past the drive-through to buy convenience store treats every single day. It doesn't help that KFC was strongly associated with big meals and big occasions - the opposite of how Gen Z snacks: impulsively, individually and often on a low budget. Meanwhile, other QSR brands were also trying to grow beyond meal times by launching more variety and new menu options. But the category was still struggling to win Gen Z's everyday snacking moments. KFC saw the opportunity in snacking too, but entering this space wasn't simple. We had to build new permission for the brand: a new product language, a new role in Gen Z's day, and a new reason to choose KFC outside meal time.
Solution:
CHALLENGE: Gen Z's snacking revealed a deeper paradox: this generation is constantly torn between what they desire and what they can actually spend on. Their cravings are emotional, trend-led and impulsive, but their choices are rational, budget-conscious and shaped by everyday routines. They are one of the hardest generations to decode because their "want" brain and "buy" brain do not always agree. IDEA: We created a Two-Agent Curation Methodology to understand both halves of Gen Z's snacking brain. The Chief Trend Officer operated like the creative right side of the brain - decoding trends, desirability, aesthetics, cultural signals and what felt cool, exciting and crave-worthy in the moment. The Chief Gen Z Behaviour Officer operated like the logical left side of the brain - grounding those desires in budgets, spending patterns, routines and purchase behaviour. Together, these two agents helped KFC balance emotional craving with rational conversion. The result was the creation of KFC Treats: a sub brand, with a small, limited menu designed to hit specific GenZ sweet spots. While the category responded by opening up more offers, chasing quantity and variety, KFC Treats chose a different route: quality curation that focuses on cracking the tension between trends, crave-ability, seasonality, and wallet size to find the few treats Gen Z would both desire and actually buy.
